Genjutsu
Genjutsu Overview
Genjutsu (幻術, Literally meaning: Illusionary Techniques) is one of the main jutsu categories which uses chakra. Unlike ninjutsu, the effects of genjutsu are not real, being only illusions experienced by those who fall victim to it.
A genjutsu is created when a ninja either: controls the chakra flow of a target's cerebral nervous system (thereby affecting their five senses) or spreads their chakra into their surroundings to create phantoms and illusions. The former type, Control Genjutsu, is frequently used to create false images and/or trick the body into believing its has experienced physical pain. This is done by hijacking a specific function of the human brain, the part that controls perception and processing information. Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others - similar to brainwashing - by feeding the victim illusive suggestions. Most genjutsu is performed visually, requiring the target make eye contact with the caster or eye contact with a specific image. Other methods include integration with nature transformation, as shown with Water and Lightning Release, and in the anime, ingesting special pills that activate when the target sleeps. Audible genjutsu is deemed the most dangerous because the user can trap victims from long distances (however is a double-edged sword as it can also affect allies!).
Genjutsu Mechanics
Genjutsu Works in One of Two Ways:
- Environment Genjutsu: This is the weaker but easier form of Illusion (typically reserved for C Rank and Lower Genjutsu). Rather than infecting a target with their chakra, chakra leaks from the user into their surroundings to create phantoms/illusions to shape them into the user's design. This type merely confuses the target at the cost of neither restricting nor damaging them. This type of Genjutsu cannot be Dispelled, except by the caster. This is because it is injected into the environment. This means Environment Genjutsu CANNOT be used to hide the user's presence, for they are not part of the Illusion!
- Control Genjutsu: This is the most common and the most effective type of Illusion. This type of Genjutsu requires a "Trigger" or a "Trap". This Trigger/Trap is the Specific Image, Sound, Taste, Texture, or Scent that activates a Genjutsu! Once that trigger or trap is successfully sprung, the target's chakra is infected with the casters. Triggers can be avoided, but only if the target has the Knowledge Stat (or a legit IC reason) required to know what to avoid. Some triggers are subtle such as gazing at a specific portion of the caster's body (like their eyes or even their fingers). If a specific sense of a target is blocked by outside circumstances (i.e. Hidden Mist Jutsu blocking a person's eyesight), then that sense of Sight is impossible to use for Genjutsu purposes! This is where techniques like Hiding in Mist are handy as they negate Visual Genjutsu from being cast!
Types of Genjutsu Triggers
Eye Contact, Looking at Specific Limbs or Areas of the Body, Music, Touch, a Specific Odor, Eating a Certain Food or Pill, Etc.
Casting a Genjutsu
- If casting an Environment Genjutsu then you simply make the Hand Seals and activate the Genjutsu. Simple as that.
- If casting a Control Genjutsu, the caster must stay still during the casting of the illusion. He cannot move until the next turn, as Genjutsu requires the full attention of one's brain. If he decides to move, then he cannot cast another Genjutsu until he ceases movement once more and activates it while standing still.
Genjutsu Effects
Note: A Genjutsu with the "Area" Effect goes a rank lower in efficiency as far as this chart is concerned.
- D Rank Genjutsu
Restricted to Minor Environment Genjutsu including creating Illusionary people or objects.
- C Rank Genjutsu
Better Environment Genjutsu including creating Fireballs from the Sky or reshaping the battlefield itself or Minor Control Genjutsu. Control Genjutsu if they succeed can stun a target for one turn (this turn takes place after the reaction turn). This is due to a chilling effect like witnessing something scary like a monster attacking you.
B rank Genjutsu
Major Environmental Genjutsu including Meteors/Disasters or Better Control Genjutsu. Control Genjutsu if succeeded can stun a target for two turns (these take place AFTER the initial reaction turn where the target (s) either can successfully defend or fail). These is due to a particularly gorey situation including having your arms melted off or being stabbed by several stakes.
A Rank Genjutsu
Elite Environmental Genjutsu that can create an image convincing enough to confuse/trick everyone in a topic. This can include seeing a whole village destroyed! It also can be used for Major Control Genjutsu. Control Genjutsu if succeeded can stun a target for three whole turns (these take place AFTER the initial reaction turn where the target (s) successfully defend or fail). These are the truly dangerous Genjutsu, as they can essentially make a target see their death.
S Rank Genjutsu
Elite Control Genjutsu. These Genjutsu are reserved only for the Genjutsu Experts, and can essentially paralyze their opponents (leaving them open for Death). A Successful Control Genjutsu can stun a target for five whole turns! These effects can be truly traumatic as they can even inflict real pain (albeit not actually kill their target).
X Rank Genjutsu
Ultimate Genjutsu. This is a costly but deadly technique that can make-or-break a fight. An X rank Genjutsu can completely incapacitate or potentially even kill a target if it's successful. These Genjutsu are nearly impossible to obtain, as it takes a Kage-Level Shinobi to even be able to attempt the Jutsu (much less land it).
Breaking/Countering Genjutsu
Figuring out Genjutsu
Use this Chart (It's a Simple Intelligence vs. Intelligence Check)
If the caster is equal or lower than the target in Intelligence
Their Genjutsu is unreliable (and susceptible to an immediate Genjutsu Counter/Genjutsu Break/Pain Break). Environmental Genjutsu is useless.
If the caster is only a tier above the target in Intelligence
Their Genjutsu is slightly effective. Every Genjutsu's stun time is reduced by 2 posts (if this goes to 0 then that level of Genjutsu is useless on them) before the target can break out of it with Genjutsu Counter/Genjutsu Break/Pain Break. If Environment Genjutsu is used then it only takes 1 post to figure out it's an illusion.
If the caster is two tiers higher than the target in Intelligence
Then their Genjutsu is truly effective. Every Genjutsu's stun time is only reduced by 1 post (if this goes to 0 then that level of Genjutsu is useless) before the target can break out of it with Genjutsu Counter/Genjutsu Break/Pain Break. If Environment Genjutsu is used then it only takes 2 posts to figure out it's an illusion.
If the Intelligence of the user is three tiers higher (or more) than their target
Their Genjutsu is perfect. The target must endure the full stun time and cannot figure out the Environment Genjutsu.
Recognizing Genjutsu
It's simple. If you can use the technique in play yourself IC, then an Intelligence check doesn't apply and you can instantly break it (because why would your Genjutsu work on you?). The same is said if you have experienced the Illusion before, as it's hard to fall for the same Genjutsu twice. Committed Genjutsu players should be aware that it's always best to have a library of Illusions to use so that they do not suffer from this issue.
Resistances/Immunities
- Uchiha with the Tomoe 3 Sharingan are immune to A rank Visual Genjutsu and below due to their Piercing Eye.
- Jinchurikii are immune to Genjutsu entirely if they are either wild and in a Tailed Beast Form like Version 1 or Version 2 due to the wild mix of their chakras, beast-like state, and the intensive pain of the transformation preventing them from being affected by mental attacks.
- Jinchurikii who have tamed their beast are also resistant to falling for Genjutsu, as they can break it by asking their Bijuu to perform Dispel on them. They are also immune if they are in their Version 1 or Version 2 forms due to their chakra and the bijuus being perfectly mixed (ergo passively breaking them out of any illusion placed on them)!
- Byakugan Users are capable of piercing through Genjutsu thereby making them resistant to Visual Genjutsu up to A rank. This means they cannot be successfully tricked, but they must still use the chakra to break out of it (as opposed to the Uchiha's full immunity).
- Shadow Clones are immune to Genjutsu.
- Sensor Experts are resistant to Genjutsu as they can sense the fluctuation of a person's chakra and therefore determine that they are in fact in a Genjutsu!
-Wild Bijuu not yet sealed in a Jinchurikii are immune to Genjutsu not utilized by the Sharingan or Rinnegan.
- Aburame Bugs are immune to Genjutsu due to being insects.
Genjutsu Break
A Genjutsu Break is a technique where you force out an enemy's chakra breaking their hold on you. Requires the Genjutsu Dispel technique (in Non-Elemental Ninjutsu Library). If you fully resist their Genjutsu due to an equal or higher Intelligence then you can cast it immediately. If you partially resist then you must wait out the timer until you can successfully break the Genjutsu. Alternatively if you are not the target of a Genjutsu then you can break someone else out of a Genjutsu without an Intelligence check as you can tell that they are paralyzed.
Rank of the Genjutsu = Cost of the Genjutsu Break
Pain Break
Alternatively if you cannot make Hand Seals for the Genjutsu Break because of the Illusion or simply don't have the stamina to break out of a Genjutsu, you can choose to damage yourself as long as the method is plausible (i.e. using a Signature Jutsu you don't need hand seals for, biting your tongue, etc.).
This means dealing damage to yourself equal to your Constitution or Strength (whichever is lower).
Genjutsu Counter
If your Intelligence is equal or higher than your opponent, AND you possess the Genjutsu Skill, then you can actually forego the Trigger and take control of the Illusion and use it against your opponent! Keep in mind that the Jutsu you use MUST be equal or higher to the level of Genjutsu used against you. If their Intelligence is equal to yours and you try to Counter... you guys essentially enter a vicious cycle of Genjutsu Tug-of-War until one of you decides to give up and end the chain!
