The sun shone down upon the training grounds one odd autumn day. It was not terribly uncommon, nor all that typical, for the heat of summer weather to meander its way into the domain of the later -or even the earlier- seasons. In some regions, the Land of Wind in particular, one might suffer the extreme heat of mid summer deep in the throes of winter itself. Izumi had never been to that area of the continent, thankfully. His home was one where the commonalities of seasonal changes were more forthright. Fall was typically cooler, with scattered hot and cold days mixed in here and there. This was the way he preferred it. Or maybe he'd just grown so accustomed to it that any deviation seemed to him simply inappropriate.
While no fan of the sun's direct heat, Izumi found summers and the sparse hot days outlying it as the best for training. Aside from the mildly irritating temperature, those days brought with them an abundance of light. As a young Uchiha with no access to his clan's Doujutsu, he relied exclusively on widespread sunlight for the best ocular conditions. Now, since his preference for mission conditions was the deepest dark in the blackest night, one might think that he'd want his training to be much the same. Not the case with young Izumi. The only missions accessible to one of his rank were so menial that he could only maintain interest in them if they were also part of his training. So, he relegated his lightless training to missions, while his standard training was exclusively in daylight. This allowed him to practice the things that he had the least mastery of during training, because the increased visibility allowed for him to see what mistakes he makes in order to correct them as best he could. Then, during night time missions, he could perfect what he practiced during the day.
Protected from the unyielding light of the sun by the overarching branch of a tall, thick tree, Izumi watched the few other Genin at the training grounds. They were going through their own motions, throwing kunai and shuriken, punching the air and training logs, going through the motions of their tai and buki jutsu, and so on and so forth. He observed for a while from the shadows. The children that noticed him assumed that he was just waiting on his team to arrive. They were only partially correct. His team wasn't set to arrive for a few hours. He specifically arrived early, as he often did, to satisfy his curiosity of how his peers decided to train. He was looking for the method, but what he really needed was the reason, the motivation, behind why they did it. He just didn't realize it quite yet.

Nothing of any note happened while Izumi waited there. The many young shinobi tasked with growing greater in power continued to train in exactly the way that all of them were taught during their time in the academy. These are methods that Izumi was entirely familiar with, but he'd lost faith in them for one simple reason: Arisa. She was the top of Izumi's class, meaning that she had defeated him at every single turn. Despite his flawless grades, despite following the senseis' provided training regimen to the "t", he always lost to her. She grew past him with training of her own that she of course refused to share with any of the other students. Izumi spent most of his time, then, determined to beat her. With that goal, he was able to progress to such a high point that all others faded away. Those last few years had become a close-knit competition between only Izumi and Arisa, with him always rising to the challenge but failing in the end. This girl, of no great clan or inherent promise, defeated students of the greatest pedigrees, including more than just Senju, Uchiha, and Hyuga. She's the only challenge that Izumi has never been able to overcome. How fortunate, then, that she was assigned to his team.

Without warning, the bright light of day collapsed into a beam of radiance which shone down from the heavens, breaking an inexplicable darkness to illuminate the presence of a single young girl walking into the training grounds. She was as an angel among men, a creature so beautiful that she could only be from another world, a piece of -essence, even - of divinity. Her light radiated to all around her -everyone and everything in her presence. Her hair was so bright and lovely, her features so smooth and delicate, her body the ideal image of beauty.
This was the effect Arisa had on most young boys. Izumi knew she was approaching when all of the males in the training ground suddenly stopped what they were doing and tried unsuccessfully to hide their wandering eyes. She didn't have that kind of effect on Izumi, however. He only saw her as his competition, her strength an obstacle for him to overcome. He never really cared enough to wonder if, perhaps, there was a reason for how other boys behaved around her. He wasn't even interested enough to realize what he might be overlooking or missing out on.
From birth, Arisa was an attractive child. She had this natural beauty that could never really be captured with words. Her life was fairly easy as a result. She went from adorable baby to gorgeous child and now adored teenager. Everything there was to have was offered to her on a silver platter by merit of her appearance alone. Most would call it a true gift from God, but Arisa disagreed completely. She never liked the idea of people just handing things to her that she didn't earn, but she didn't want to be ungrateful. So she'd give the impression that she was so thankful and that every little thing anyone did for her had such a positive effect on her mood, but inside it burned her.
This inner fire was a determination like no other and she put it to great use. While Arisa was born with great natural beauty, she was not born of any particular talent. She was of no great clan, possessed no kekkei genkai, and was gifted in no attributes useful to a shinobi. She was plain terrible with ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu when she entered the academy. It burned her to see someone like Izumi, who, as an Uchiha, took to ninjutsu and genjutsu with such absurd ease. So she focused her fire into training and, within a year, she had become the very best student in her class. It took little time for other students to target her, to try and overthrow her in title of best, but for some reason, it was only girls. They never came close to her level. Izumi was the only one, and so they competed for the spot on the top. Though he came close on many occasion, Izumi never was able to actually beat her. She liked that. An Uchiha prodigy that could not come close to what she had gained through effort alone. You can imagine her joy when she heard what students would be placed on her team: the only one able to compete with her and a girl that would not try and pine over her affections.

Izumi was entirely unaffected by Arisa's charms, but he did acknowledge their existence. He could always tell when Arisa was around: all the boys in the area would suddenly stop what they were doing and stare at her. So when the training in the training grounds came to a quick halt, with several thuds from falling kunai or unblocked punches, he knew that Arisa had arrived. She walked towards the center, the portion that was furthest from all of the other kids at the grounds. While that was the best place to keep her distance, it was also effectively center stage. Everybody had a good view of her and she didn't really care much for that. She'd find consonance with all the other girls, for they no longer had effective training partners -what with all the boys standing there, too busy trying to seem like they're not staring to actually train.
Arisa folded her arms and pouted. She made no effort to hide her disdain for the attention. After a few minutes alone in thought, Arisa brightened her expression. Haria waved hello in the distance.
Haria was a girl of the Nara Clan and the third member of Izumi's team. She was basically the opposite of Arisa: born with little physical beauty, but above average talent. She was no prodigy, of course, but Ninjutsu and studies in general came easily to her. Unfortunately, she saw herself as terribly unattractive as a child. So while Arisa devoted her years before the academy to getting stronger, Haria devoted hers to looking better. It worked pretty well. She wasn't quite on the level of Arisa, but she got almost as much attention from the boys.
Once upon a time, she reveled in that. It's all she'd ever dream about since she was little. But when she was in the academy for a while and watched Arisa up close, she started to change her ideals on what matters. Now, she maintains her appearance as much as her skills, but cares nothing for how others judge her. She feels that it's her place to help everyone move forward so that nobody ever has to feel as insecure as she once did. She played tutor to many a student in the academy, trying to help all those children in their goals of reaching the level of Arisa Watanabe -or at least Izumi Uchiha.

The two girls had only just managed to acquaint each other when they were interrupted. An abrupt gust turned their attention back. There before them stood a man, garbed in the standard Jounin attire of the Leaf Village. The loose blue pants and undershirt did little to hide his muscular features. The green flak jacket only added to them, making him appear bulkier than he really was. His features were very clean and cut; by all accounts, he was of the more attractive of the Jounin sensei. And he obviously belonged to the Senju clan. The look of his black hair and skin tone were a true testament to that.
"I see we've all arrived." Suzuko said. Arisa and Haria glanced around, then at each other. They knew that slacker Izumi was supposed to be on their team, but he wasn't there. Maybe he wasn't showing up today? Or maybe he got kicked off? They gave each other a slight shrug, implying that neither really cared one way or the other.
"Let's begin with introductions. I am Suzuko Senju, and I will be your sensei." He said, giving no explanation or apparent care towards his not being present during sensei assigning at the academy. Typically, the Genin squads are announced by the homeroom teacher and then the squad sensei will pick the children up for their introductory training session. Team Suzuko instead was greeted with a messenger, telling them that training would be happening the next day - today - at the training field and to not be late.
I am a Jounin of the Senju Clan, I am skilled in Kenjutsu and Wood Release Ninjutsu, and I will see to it that you lot become the finest genin this village has ever seen." Suzuko continued, setting the pace for the others. He gestured for Arisa to go next.
"Um, I'm Arisa Watanabe. I'm good at Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, and Genjutsu, but I prefer Taijutsu and Shurikenjutsu above the others. I'm gonna be the strongest ninja in the entire village." Arisa replied with only a short pause. It was clear that she was a goal-oriented sort of person, not one to trifle with doubted thought.
Suzuko nodded and motioned for Haria.
"Oh, uh, my name is Haria Nara. I'm uh, from the Nara Clan. We use shadows and stuff, but I don't really know how to do that stuff yet. I'm okay with Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, but you know, not really Taijutsu. Um, but what I really wanna learn is medical ninjutsu so I uh, can help people, and stuff. I don't really have any goals or anything, uh, and that's it, I guess." Haria said. She was definitely a more nervous talker than Arisa.
Suzuko nodded again and motioned towards a tree in the distance. "Alright Izumi, your turn."

Izumi rolled his eyes and with an inaudible grunt, jumped down from his perch in the tree. He lumbered on over to where the rest of them were so he could take his turn. Arisa pouted her lips. She couldn't believe this guy! How dare he show up late to their first ever training session! She wasn't going to say anything out loud, but this guy really got on her nerves.
Suzuko was aware that Izumi had been paying attention. There was no need to instruct him on what to do. He also saw the frustration on Arisa's face. She didn't care for the apparent disrespect, which is good. Izumi wasn't late, of course, but only he and Suzuko knew that.
"My name is Izumi Uchiha. I'm okay with Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu. Don't really have any preferences for which. Don't have any goals, either."
Suzuko nodded, processing this team of children. He'd worked with a few teams as a stand-in for a few of his fellow Jounin, but this was his first time handling a team in full. He was more than ready, according to the higher ups. He was excited, sure, to be able to raise up part of the new generation of ninja, but it was a lot of responsibility that he didn't think he'd ever really be ready for. He'd play a large part in these children's lives for at least the next two years, possibly longer. He'd also be solely responsible for their development from this point until their passing of the Chuunin Exams, which is expected to be roughly two years from the date of academy graduation. That meant he would need to develop a clear and solid plan for exactly how each of the three would grow.
Arisa would be easy enough. She was obviously self-motivated and dedicated. Her goal of power would lend to a high degree of receptiveness to teaching. A priority in Taijutsu and Shurikenjutsu would also be helpful in the team. Haria is already leaning towards a support role. He'd need some aid in teaching her medical ninjutsu, but that should be easy enough. He could also encourage her growth in her clan's shadow jutsu. Beyond that, she would only need other support type abilities that time alone would reveal. Suzuko would prefer that she be a sensor, but as far as he knew, that was a thing someone is born with. Izumi would be the tough one. His transcripts show that he obviously has some talent. Being an Uchiha, Izumi would be geared towards Genjutsu. With Arisa preferring Taijutsu, Izumi would be best served with Kenjutsu, which Suzuko could instruct. Suzuko reasoned that he could leave Haria on her path to support, and then lead Izumi and Arisa into complimenting roles to make for an effective team.

The glare Arisa gave Izumi -on account of his being late- could pierce steel. Izumi avoided eye contact as best he could. To be honest, she frightened him when she got like that. He'd never known the misery of being on the receiving end of her glares and boy, he did not like it.
Suzuko and Haria could feel the tension in the air, neither particularly wanting to cut it; Haria was scared to and Suzuko thought it funny. But, time was wasting. "Now that introductions are out of the way, we'll get to training. We'll meet here, same time, six days of the week. We will reassess goals at varying points, but for the day to day, we'll commit only to training." Suzuko said. He took a sword out of his sheath. He had two on his person, one on each hip. The one drawn was presented to Izumi. "Take it. I'll instruct you in Kenjutsu." Izumi raised an eyebrow as he slowly took the katana by its handle. His hand dropped down as soon as Suzuko let go. It was a lot heavier than he thought it'd be. Seeing all those Chuunin and Jounin handling swords and sabers with such ease and at such speed gave him the impression that they must just be very light. They are not light.
"Don't worry, you'll get used to it." Suzuko chuckled. He looked over at Arisa and Haria, who were bright eyed and awaiting their training. "You two will practice together. Arisa, I want you to bring Haria up to speed on academy level Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, and Genjutsu." Haria was excited to get to train with Arisa, but Arisa was obviously displeased. How dare that slacker Izumi get special one on one attention while she had to train with another student! Sure, they were Genin, but that kind of training was nothing special at all! She'd fall way below all of her classmates!
