Prologue: Academy Days Chapter 1: The Importance of Prudence -1-
The blinds to Natsuki's bedroom were shuttered, but that didn't stop the early morning sun's rays from creeping underneath them. They were bright, but, mostly warm - it would be a hot day - and they were enough to disturb the slumbering girl; her nose twitched, and she squinted. She wanted desperately to keep her eyes shut tight, but then, a harsh knock rapped at her door. Not once, or twice, but thrice! "Darling, it's time to wake up," her mother's voice accompanied the noise. The youth groaned, perhaps more audibly than she intended and dove into her pillow sanctuary. After all, those flashes of light could surely still be moonbeams.
They weren't. Yuna Uchiha knew her daughter hated mornings. It took her progeny forever to crawl out of bed, and even longer still to be a pleasant person after waking. However, that did not change the simple fact: the Academy started a little bit after the crack of dawn (around 7:30ish). At nearly five past the hour already, Natsuki would probably be late. Those constant tardies were the only blemish on an otherwise academically pristine record. Yuna waited a few moments, and only heard her daughter shift in bed with no other prominent movement. While shaking her head, the elder Uchiha, opened the door; a nasty wooden creak followed, causing Natsuki to draw the ample amount of blankets (three) over-top of her body. Remaining silent, Yuna, approached the bedside and firmly brought a hand beneath the sheets. In one motion she tore the blankets off (sheets and all), and with another yanked the pillow out from beneath Natsuki. When her daughter still didn't budge, she turned and also slipped the blinds up - letting in as much sunlight as possible. Natsuki whined. It streamed right onto the preteen's body. "It's a lovely day," Yuna said. "You'll need to gather your things and skip breakfast sweetie. Unless you wish to be late again." She started for the door, but halted to glance around the cluttered room. Aside from the ever-present leaning tower of books, at least Natsuki's clothes were in their proper drawers today. "Your father and Ayame are already waiting outside." "Ugh, mornings are bullshit." Natsuki quipped aloud after several moments of being lost in the quiet (with her face still pressed against the bed), and after she assumed her mother departed. Unfortunately, the Uchiha Matriarch knew better than to leave before the preteen fully awoke, and thus, still lingered by the door. Natsuki could feel that scowl, and knew right away: she should have paid attention, listened for her mother's footfalls and the awful squeals of applied pressure on hardwood stairs. Me and my big mouth, she intoned. "I see your dad is still in the habit of cursing around you," Yuna replied more amused than angry at the foul language slip up. He's still smoking behind my back too - as if I can't smell it on him. "I'll have a little talk with him later. As for you, get your butt moving." And with that brief command, Yuna effortlessly retrieved Natsuki's Academy attire and laid it out. "Get dressed - your lunch is on the counter. And, try not to act so embarrassed by your father today." Hatsuo Inuzuka (Uchiha to most for over a decade), had been walking Natsuki to the Academy since she started years ago. He would be damned if such a tradition would die so soon before her graduation. I know she can take care of herself, and my presence mortifies her, but, I refuse to lose these moments right now. When the Uchiha Youth finally appeared on the porch, his canine companion immediately bounded over to her; attacking with licks and nuzzles, but in the process, nearly knocking her to the ground. Ayame, as most dogs raised by the Inuzuka, happened to be nearly twice Natsuki's body weight. Hatsuo chuckled at the display, approaching his daughter with a contagious grin. She still appeared half-asleep with that satchel full of materials slung around her shoulder; clutched as she endured Ayame's affection. But, she smiled as well. Heh, shouldn't worry so much. If anyone tried to harm her, they'd probably get a mauling for their trouble. He patted Ayame as he arrived beside her. "Ready for another day then?" "Not really, another hour of sleep would have been lovely, dad." "You can nap in first period, I won't tell," came the reply. Hatsuo winked - just another day after all. Maybe, but soon life, would be a whirlwind of emotion and stress - graduation ever near, or so she thought anyway: the life of a Genin in Konohagakure wouldn't be precisely glamorous. She'd have plenty of time to read at least; speaking of which Natsuki retrieved a book and began to leaf through it as her 'escort' of dog and man led the way. It wouldn't be a far walk to the Academy.

Ring, Ring, Ring! Alarm clocks are the worst! At least that's what the Senju thought to himself as he was tempted to smash the damn thing into pieces with a thunderous slap. He hated waking up in the morning more than anything. He knew that he was supposed to get up. He knew he had to go to the Academy. But did he have to go? He was already a shoe-in to graduate. Would one day really be a big deal? He could pretend to be sick.
Ha. That was a cute thought. He knew he wouldn't get away with it.
Kaito groaned loudly and kicked his legs into the air, all the while his head still buried into the pillow. "I don't waaaannaaa get up," he thought to himself pouting. He had probably spend too long last night trying to work on his Ninjutsu. Someone his age needed all the sleep he could get, and he was squandering his on all this stupid Ninjutsu training. The young Senju knew that he wasn't progressing fast enough however. He needed to work as hard as possible.
Maybe five more minutes wouldn't be such a big deal. He closed his eyes, letting himself have a small bit of relief. But like all good things, it quickly backfired once it became more than a little.
"KAITO!"
The sound of his yell was enough to open Kaito's eyes wide. His little blue eyes dilated with fear. He overslept. "Fuck. Fuck. FUck. FUCK." he thought to himself as he jumped out of bed, pumped adrenaline driving him to move faster than ever. Pillows and blankets thrusted from the wind-force of his jump. He reached into his dresser to pull out his usual ninja clothes. A brown shirt, white pants, a blue jacket, and his Ninja Sandals. He grabbed his bag next to the dresser containing his books and other assorted things, and leapt out of the window.
Anything was better than dealing with another lecture from Dad. Even skipping breakfast. He knew what his dad was going to say, and he didn't need anymore of his lectures. "It's this lazy attitude that keeps you from the top of the class, Kaito. This is why you fall behind that Uchiha Girl, Yuna's daughter. You're not living up to your potential."
It was all the same. He was doing his best, but it was never enough. He huffed. He landed on his feet with a soft thud. His dad probably didn't even hear him jump out the window.
He reached into his bag and pulled out a comb. He had a serious case of bed-head, and it needed fixing. He didn't want to be made fun of at school after all. It wasn't exactly cool to walk into school and have your hair in all sorts of split-ends and knots. He brushed it quickly, taking advantage of the fact that the street was mostly empty at the moment. Mostly.
Natsuki, who lived farther away from the Academy, was walking toward the school around the time Kaito was finishing up his hair. He wasn't surprised. He normally spotted her on the way to the Academy. But she was, as usual, with her dad.And so he kept his distance. Not because he never wanted to walk and talk to her, but rather it was awkward to invade a space like that. Who interrupted a father and daughter talking on the way to school? It just didn't seem right. However he noticed something he usually didn't before today.
And that's when his eyes wandered and caught the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. His heart sped up and his eyes widened. He couldn't resist it. He had to go for it. She was just too cute.
"PUPPY!"
Who could resist that beautiful white fur? This dog was the most adorable creature he had ever laid eyes on.

-2-
As Natsuki and Hatsuo walked, street vendors began their daily rituals as well - setting up for a new day of sales. Owners of smaller ones spaced out along the paved road - practical carts proudly displaying the kanji for 'fire' - chatted amongst themselves. Licensed by the village, each offered a unique set of items, foods or sweets, but unfortunately, wouldn't be allowed to start peddling properly for another half hour or so. Until then, they'd place displays of their most prominent wares, or, delicious treats, at the front of their mobile shops. A few of the regulars did pause briefly and wave (or nod) at the father and daughter pair as they passed the stalls, but, the majority kept hustling away at their tasks - ever in a hurry to be prepared by the time the market opened. Ayame appeared most interested in those that stocked fresh baked goods, or other delicious delights. She pressed her snout against the carts in question and sniffed. Hatsuo allowed his companion a few moments of window shopping before gently urging her forward with a sharp click of his tongue each time. Meanwhile, Natsuki lagged lost in a world of her own making: her eyes glued to passages in the book she held. Thankfully, she nearly had every step on her morning route to the Academy memorized after all these years. "Careful now, you almost stepped on that crack," Hatsuo jested. "You don't want to hurt mom's back, do you?" He asked with all the enthusiasm that a dad could muster when humiliating their children. As he spoke, he dug into a pocket to retrieve his bad habit. Soon, he blew smoke forward in time with his footfalls. Ayame hated that smell and retreated to stride alongside Natsuki. She greeted Natsuki's affectionate petting with nuzzling enthusiasm. "You believe I won't tell her? You were supposed to quit dad." "I did." "Great job there, then. You realize mom's not stupid, and that SHE does the laundry, right? You can't get that aroma out of your clothes." "I can try." "And you'll fail." "Let me worry about that kiddo, just go back to frolicking with those elves of yours." He inhaled deeply; then exhaled forming tiny circles of puffed smoke-rings. Natsuki sighed but continued to read her fantasy novel regardless. Shows what he knows: this one is about Wizards. The main street they followed curved its path adjacent to a river. Decorated with various trees, their canopies intertwined and mingled almost organically with the buildings built between them. The bright greens and yellows of early Spring came coordinated with overpowering sweet fragrances, chirping birds, and skittering critters. Their route eventually widened, splitting into branching roads and walkways - each home to respective residences, storefronts, and districts of towering apartment complexes. Much like vines, they crossed one another at random intervals and led over-top flowing waterways. At the precipice where they converged and diverted harshly to climb up along the Hokage Mountain, the Academy stood proudly beneath the ever-watchful gaze of departed village leaders. With their destination ahead (albeit still a bit of a walk), the shout of a boy cried out loudly above the urban noise: 'Puppy!' Momentary recognition flashed across Natsuki's face. She knew that voice anywhere. It belonged to a classmate. Kaito, but he has never so much as said hi this early before. Her thoughts trailed off as she stowed her book away. With a knowing glance backward, her father slowed just as Ayame bolted forward: she could tell when someone would be a great friend. Kaito fit the bill. Hatsuo inhaled again. Not enough nicotine in the world . . . well, she's already going to be late anyways - at least they can be tardy together. He watched as Ayame cut the distance gracefully. With her white mane flowing, and bright blue eyes locked on Kaito, Ayame, stopped just short of him - her tail wagging playfully. Much like Natsuki, Kaito would be dwarfed by her size and weight. She attacked him with nuzzles and licks all the same; not caring should he happen to be knocked flat onto his rear from her affection. "Hello, Kaito," Natsuki greeted. "Trying to make a new friend?" She teased. "Oh, the Senju boy, huh," Hatsuo commented, standing close beside his daughter. "Now, now, Ayame, ease up a bit on the kid." His voice fell upon deaf ears. Ayame wanted another friend, and she'd be damned if Hatsuo was going to get in the way of that. Did he not hear how excited Kaito was? He even called her a puppy. That in itself was pretty flattering for a dog her age! This boy would be befriended. "I don't believe she's listening to you, dad."

As if he wasn't late enough already...
After getting an earful from his father, Hirohito Hyuga, Ren started walking towards the academy without a care in the world. His hands were behind his head as he slowly made his way through the streets of the Hidden Leaf Village. Purposely he chose to go through the gastronomic district so he could snatch some extra takoyakis for the "trip" and with a large smile on his face, he grabbed at least five of them inside a brown bag and held another one on his hand, for instant delight. After blowing the first piece for a few seconds, he licked his own lips in anticipation and then gave a big bite on the delicious and explosive ball of fried octopus and his mouth was instant filled with satisfaction and happiness; he did love his takoyaki. Way too much even...
In any case, he started walking again, one hand holding the deliciously warm bag of treats and the other too busy holding the current object of his affection. He hoped he would be missing the first lesson of the day, as he really wasn't feeling it. He had already passing marks, so he was graduating for sure and hence he wondered why he should even bother going. But his father seemed keen on him attending his last few classes, and he thought it was too much of a hassle to fight his old man on it, so he let him win the bout on this very day without much rhetoric involved.
As he made his way towards the academy, his naturally alerted sight caught a glimpse of two classmates he even kinda liked: the Uchiha girl and the Senju boy. And kinda liked because for the most part, Ren was either sleeping in class, or just daydreaming about something - probably more takoyakis - and he didn't socialize a hell lot. He figured he would have enough time to do that once he became a Genin, so why bother doing it now, right? Before he noticed, he was already walking towards them as this would postpone his arrival in class for a few more minutes hopefully. On the downside, he would likely have to share his food, which he was not so fond of doing, but he was polite enough to know that was the protocol.
"Late to class, I see! Don't you guys have any shame?" he said with a serious expression that lasted for a second, before he broke down in laughter. "Hahahahaha! Anyone down for some takoyakis before class?" he said with a large and gentle smile as he offered the brown bag with the treats in there. "I'm sure the doggo would be down for some, am I right?!" he winked playfully as he started at the dog with a friendly expression on his face.

-3- There was a letter on the granite counter-top; Yuna stared at it. Potential team assignments . . . already. Not a question, she already knew, but couldn't bring herself to open it quite yet. She would understand the Hokage's decision, but hints of regrets lingered still. Frowning as she washed a dish, she wiped it a few more times while water from the faucet ran over-top it. Although her daughter hadn't graduated yet, based on instructors' marks, she would, and likewise, the discussion opened for debate: who would lead a team with an Uchiha? The bloodline itself, notorious in the years of legend, and vilified in recent memory through Tenshi's actions, had significant steps to take to regain the trust of the other prominent shinobi families within the Land of Fire. They were few, but the threat of another rising against the world sent icy tendrils of worry into the minds of many. As such, Yuna knew in her heart, that they'd never accept her resignation as an ANBU leader; at least not for the desire, she wished to fill: becoming the instructor of Natsuki's Genin Team. They wanted impartiality that a member of kin could not provide. Love could blind her judgment, and perhaps, Natsuki would fall on the ever-familiar path of the Avenger; guided by an unjust and emotional hatred that could not be denied. If they knew her, they'd never suspect . . . my daughter of committing acts that would create unjust injury. She'd never be able to live with herself. Setting the plate to the side, she grasped the next. The cloth in her hand felt gross with grime. Ridding herself of it, she glanced at the unopened correspondence. The dishes would have to wait, she decided and stowed the unclean one in the sink. For a moment, she listened as the water kept running. The noise drifted away as she turned the knob. She broke the seal while walking towards the kitchen table (the round sort surrounded by four wooden chairs). Sitting in one of the seats, she unfolded the letter and read it over several times without a break. With her expression stagnate, she inhaled deeply to maintain her composure as a mix of feelings assailed her. Across from her, the TV glimmered to life; a news program played. Even if she cared to tune in, nothing of importance flashed across its screen. Instead, she read the decision once more. As she expected, her reason for resignation could not be allowed. A Hyuuga - training my daughter. She didn't know what to feel. Anger? That somehow felt misplaced. She couldn't be angry. No, she felt hurt more than anything else, but, she also understood the burdens of command. Logic dictated that she shouldn't instruct her daughter. Family ties could compromise any mission, regardless of whether or not her bloodline had anything to do with the finality of it. I won't challenge it. Of course, she never really thought she would. It's the right call - I'd put her first - how could it not be? I could never keep my emotions in check in an instance that would require a choice between one life or another . . . The letter would be left out for her husband to see after dropping Natsuki off at the Academy. Her tears would be finished by then, hopefully.

All of Kaito’s neighbors knew the kind of relationship he and his father had. It was not a pleasant one. Kontou was always hard on him, trying to push him to be better while never acknowledging his progress. It pissed him off how he never seemed to be good enough. Maybe that was why he snuck out. Another lecture from Dad would just ruin his mood. And he was determined to have a good day. Graduation was coming which meant he was going to be going on missions soon. Maybe if he progressed fast enough he’d have enough money to move out of his house and therefore deal with his dad less.
One could only hope.
Thankfully the ‘puppy’ was more than enough to distract him. The two looked eyes for a moment, the Senju boy smiling widely at her. He readied himself as he saw the big Ninja hound approach with haste, his arms wide open to catch her and his legs ready to maintain his footing.
Alas, his preparations were insufficient.
Ayame tackled him to the ground, her wet licks slobbering on him and immense fur grazing against his skin. The pressure of the big girl was enough to make Kaito uncomfortable, but he dealt with it. He was happy.
“You’ve grown a lot since the last time I’ve seen you, Ayame.”
He extended his hand forward and let his fingers scratch behind her ear. As he petted and pleased the doggo, Natsuki’s voice rang in his ears. Natsuki was his classmate, and although they didn’t talk a lot he was certain that she was a good person. Sometimes he was a little annoyed at how easy certain things came to her, but that was more because of his dad than anything she did. So he did his best to be nice to her. Only a jerk would be mean to a girl because she was talented.
“Hi, Natsuki. I guess I just got a little excited, haha. I haven’t seen Ayame in years.”
Kaito always had a soft spot for animals, perhaps even more so than for people. However at this stage having this heavy doggo all over him was beginning to be a problem. The ability to breathe with her on top of him was becoming more and more difficult. Plus his clothes were gonna be covered in dog hair now!
“Alright Ayame, down please…” he said softly but firmly.
Suddenly he heard Ren’s voice. Wow it was like a little class meeting except without the class! He couldn’t recall a time before this that all three of them just randomly bumped into each other like this. As per usual, Ren was accompanied by something that smelled delicious. Kaito wished he could have breakfast like that… but Kontou would scold him immensely for eating Takoyaki so early in the day, or even eating that as a proper meal at all.
“Hi, Ren. I mean we’re graduating soon. So the worst they could do is scold us…,” he pointed out. Kaito wasn’t a troublemaker persay, as he tried to follow his instructors directions to the letter, but he wasn’t above breaking a few rules every now and again if they didn’t matter.
Kaito’s eyes widened at the prospect of giving Takoyaki to the dog. He was strongly against it.
“Hey now that’s no food for a dog! The last thing we want is to upset Ayame’s stomach…”
He knew it wasn’t his dog, but he still didn’t want Ren to accidentally make the dog sick. His cheeks became red however, as he realized how out of turn he was making decisions for someone else’s dog.
“Sorry about that, Natsuki and Hatsuo-san. I didn’t mean to speak for you..,”

Post by Kontou [NPC] on Sept 18, 2019 23:44:31 GMT -5
Kontou awoke with the dawn, as he felt most shinobi should if they wanted to maximize on their day. The tall, built Senju adult felt that all who walked the path of the Ninja were expected to maintain a certain standard of efficiency for the sake of their village. Making sure to capitalize on the day was one of those things. Those who overslept and took their sweet time waking up (like his own son Kaito) were wasting precious time. Perhaps if Kaito wasn’t so lazy, and put in more time for his training than he’d be at the top of his class. Like he should be, instead of losing to some of his other classmates.
Honestly Kontou felt like Kaito wasn’t anywhere near he should be for his age. The boy couldn’t even use their Kekkei Genkai yet for Ashura’s sake! He knew his son had so much more potential than he displayed. After all, he was the Clan Leader’s son. It couldn’t just be laziness. There was something else holding him back. Kontou was plenty strict with his boy, not letting him ride on excuses. So it wasn’t anything he was doing wrong.
Could it be his mother? He did lose her at a pretty early age. Kontou did his best to go with Kaito to visit her grave plenty, so that his son could have a chance to talk to her every now and again. He knew that the boy had a very special connection with his mother. Losing her when he did could have inflicted a trauma that stunted his fighting potential. He would have to talk to the village about setting up some kind of counseling for the boy. It’d be good for him to talk these things out with someone. Maybe that would help him overcome it.
Alas, his thought process was interrupted by the completion of their breakfast. Kontou wasn’t much of a cook, especially compared to Suuki, but he did the best he could. Bagels with cream cheese, and sizzling bacon on the side. The latter was a rare treat, as he usually was very strict on their diet (making sure to incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables). They were the Senju Clan after all. If they didn’t eat greens, then who would?
But Kaito, despite his lacking performance, was working hard. So Kontou would reward that with a little treat. Of course, the boy actually needed to come down and eat.
“KAITO!” he barked at the boy, hoping that that would get him out of bed. But alas the boy did not show. What the hell was he doing? Kontou sighed as he motioned up the stairs to go wake up his cozy sleepyhead.
But the sound of something else deterred him.
“PUPPY!”
Oh no. Not again.
Kontou facepalmed, the Senju Clan Head knowing exactly what was about to happen. His boy really was a handful sometimes. The Senju ran outside, only to find that his fears were true. Kaito was on his floor, in the middle of public, with a dog atop him. He admired his son’s connection to animals, but he wished he knew a bit more restraint and public decorum. This was embarrassing. And with a Inuzuka Hound no less. Dear lord.
“KAITO! You can’t just treat every dog like a puppy and engage it thoughtlessly! That is a Hound bred for shinobi combat. It could probably tear you limb from limb if it wanted too. Do try to show some more restraint.”
Kontou turned his head, noticing the others gathered around. Ren, Natsuki, and Hatsuo. The latter of which embarrassed him the most. A higher-up like himself saw this embarrassing display.
“My apologizes, Hatsuo. I hope my boy didn’t offend you or your hound,” he said.

-4- "No, she isn't." Hatsuo didn't mind a little leisure here; he shook his head at the undisciplined display. More a reflection of his nature, rather than Ayame's. He took a long drag and stepped to the side, into the background of the youths. He held the breath in, then slowly released a thick puffed cloud of smoke; no effort to shape it: just a ball of exhaled poison. Sighing, he allowed Kaito to command Ayame, as it seemed, the boy didn't mind in the least being pinned to the ground by her affection. At that, the Inuzuka, couldn't help but grin - in another life, the Senju might have been a member of his family. He certainly would have fit in well enough: capable of both great love for animals, and an authoritative presence when needed. "Yes, I believe that much is obvious, Kaito." Natsuki smiled - glad for the distraction from her father's vice. In truth, she hated that just as much (maybe more) than Ayame. She glanced briefly with slight disgust at the persistent smoke and noted the length of the rolled joint. Ugh, at least ten minutes worth left. Her thoughts assumed he wouldn't light another during their walk, but she couldn't be sure of that. With him heading home after, this time might be his last chance for the day. For Ayame's part, she obeyed with one last nuzzle. Although she remained by Kaito as another potential friend approached. Her super sniffer went to work and relatively easily identified the tasty treat that Ren possessed. However, she also knew eating it would upset her stomach. Despite that knowledge, Ayame appreciated the offered morsel and wagged her tail, ears perking at the Senju Student's protest. She wouldn't risk a scold from Hatsuo by approaching the food. Hatsuo stayed quiet for the moment, lost in thought. A Hyuuga as well - full of chance meetings today. Eh, maybe there's fate at work. He knew the possibility of the three becoming squad-mates. They won't let her. A frequent train of thought this week. He frowned at it. She'll stay an Anbu leader. A fact he knew without knowledge of the letter that rested on his table. I'll take my time on the walk back - need to come up with some way to console her. And, an excuse for the aroma on my clothes . . . "Ayame knows better," Natsuki commented. She walked forward and scratched the Ninken behind the ears. Ayame barked in acknowledgment (playfully, brief, and not vicious to cause as little disturbance as possible). She nuzzled up at Natsuki's hand for a moment then peered back towards Ren. Her tail wagging slowed, and she observed. The new, demanding voice, drew her attention. It sounded like Hatsuo when he was angry: not pleasant at all, and loud, very obtrusive to her ears. "He's not a bother - though you're correct in assuming she could," Natsuki spoke for her father. "I believe she wouldn't, though; Ayame likes Kaito." Hatsuo just chuckled; allowing his daughter to speak for him didn't seem to phase him. In fact, with his wife occupying his mind, he barely noticed. He continued to embrace his bad habit. He was exhaling as Kontou approached them. "Offend, eh? Ayame broke her disposition by attacking your son with affection." Hatsuo laughed. "I should scold, but I won't. Still the same Kontou - you know you should lighten up a bit. Ninken aren't always weapons; sometimes, they're just happy canines." The Inuzuka's words sifted between great puffs of smoke. With his cigarette half-finished, he turned his attention back towards the hungry, hungry Hyuuga. A bad joke maybe, but Hatsuo couldn't remember a single instance where Ren wasn't eating in his presence. This chance meeting amused Hatsuo, even if it attributed to Natsuki being tardy. "Oh, hello, Ren," Natsuki said. "I didn't mean to ignore you, but busy streets today as you can tell, and all." She stared at her classmate's food with the brief urge in her stomach but knew to have something like that this early, wouldn't rest well with her belly. "I'll have to decline," she added, gesturing to the yummy morsel. As for class: "There isn't any shame in it. Sometimes, being an outlier is a good thing. It's just review at this point for our exams; you two are ready, right?"

Ren also noticed that a lot of jonin were showing up at the scene and that made him feel a bit unease, especially because he had just been scolded by his father about being late to class. Now there was a bunch of other witnesses to their lateness, but this uneasiness only lasted for a brief moment, as he soon came to realize that they were already late and as such, there was no use crying over spilled milk, so he just shrugged it off and the peace returned to his smile.
Moreover, Kaito had a fairly good point and Ren just quickly nodded in agreement. ”That is very true, Kaito-kun!” he said with a happy and carefree smile as he took another large bite on his Takoyaki; it felt absolutely incredible in the mouth and he couldn’t hide the satisfaction on his expression, but it quickly faded away as the boy was quick to tell him not to feed the dog such a delicious treat.
The boy arched one of his brows in confusion. ”Why wouldn’t it be good? This thing is good for everyone!” he argued, but then Natsuki was quick to reject the food as well and the only thing left for him to do about was sigh and nodded. ”Well, whatever then! More for me! Hehe!” and there he went, finding a bit of happiness even amidst his initial frustration; it was indeed really hard to keep the young Hyuga heir in a bad mood.
But before he could say anything else, Kaito’s father came scolding him in an even harsher way than Hirohito had scolded Ren, and he couldn’t help but to feel a bit bad for him. Shinobi life was rough, and the expectations from family could be overwhelming at times. Ren was lucky his father wasn’t all like that, but still, he wished he could do something about his friend. And so he did.
With a few slow steps, Ren approached Kontou and he stared at the big man with his bland lilac eyes. ”But they are still dogs. And just like we are shinobi and we still like affection and carefree moments, so do they, Senju-san.” he said with a caring smile on his face, before turning away from the older man and back to his friends, just in time to hear what Natsuki was saying.
Ren chuckled lightly and firmly nodded his head. ”I think we will all do well. It is a clone technique, after all. I think we are all beyond that at this point! Hehe!” he said with confidence before making himself look a bit goofier by attacking the Takoyaki again.

{Spoiler} Remember when I fucked up the color codes last turn? Well it's fixed now.
Blue = Kaito
Red = Kontou
My bad guys. Kaito laughed nervously at Natsuki’s teasing remark. He supposed he was rather silly in his entrance. If Ayame wasn’t atop him he’d be scratching the back of his head in tandem with his nervous response. But instead he just let out that weak chuckle. “Dawww” Kaito blurted out as Ayame nuzzled him once more, petting the dog one last time before managing to get on his feet. Sadly that was about all the kid had time for before the worst of the worst happened. His dad showed up. “KAITO!” the man’s roaring shout to him rang in his ears like a bell. “Aw shit,” Kaito muttered to himself with a sigh. Of course his dad heard them. Now he was in for it. He scolded him about the dog. Now apparently playing with a dog was shameful on top of all the other things Kaito did. How could Kaito ever think it’d be okay to play with a dog? Thankfully Kontou couldn’t see the boy as he rolled his eyes. “Yes, father…,” the Senju groaned in response. It was rather forced and flat, as Kaito was visibly upset by his father’s appearance. Of course he had to scold him in front of everyone, on top of being a jerk as usual. It took a lot to get under the Senju boy’s skin, but that definitely was sufficient fuel for the fire. He turned around and faced Kontou directly with pure eye contact. He put his hands into his pockets and didn’t say anything, and kept a flat face about him. Kaito didn’t even get a chance to respond to Ren and Natsuki about Ayame, as the disturbance of his father kinda distracted him from the current conversation over the Takoyaki. His mood was definitely soured to say the least. This is exactly why he had snuck out in the first place to get to school. Having Kontou apologize to Natsuki’s dad on top of everything only made it all the more vexing. Kaito didn’t even do anything wrong. Yet of course it was being treated as a horrid offense. It was comforting however, when the others defended him. All three of them calmed the Senju’s anger with their supportive words in defense of him. It was nice having backup for a change, instead of getting reamed by his dad alone. Hearing Hatsuo tell his dad to lighten up was cathartic to say the least. It made Kaito feel reassured that his dad was definitely too uptight. And that he wasn’t the only one who thought so. “Yeah I’m sure the three of us will pass at the very least if not excel. Little Miss Uchiha over here even has some of the best test scores in our class, so she’s definitely a shoe-in,” he said with a chuckle, before a small smile leaked from his moody demeanor. WC: 493

Kontou was a bit peeved at his son’s response. Just going through the motions instead of paying his father the due respect. But he was in public now. He would discipline his son later with a harsh talking to. Doing it here would only serve to make the Senju Clan Head look bad. The way his son was looking at him, it was almost as if the boy was challenging him. What a stubborn child. It’s as if he never listened to a damn thing that the older shinobi told him. He was a child, he didn’t know left from right, but he was always so damn rebellious. He never listened to him no matter what he said.
Having all three of the others jump on him was another vexing matter.
But he remained firm. Half of them were children after all.
“You all seem to be taking my words a bit too literally. I’m aware the Inuzuka pets are well-trained and well-disciplined. But not every animal my son meets is going to be on the village’s side. The other villages may not have dog-tamers, but they have similar enough creatures. Wolves, Ninja Hounds, and other canine creatures serve as summoning contracts.
Kaito here seems to forget the difference between a pet and a shinobi weapon.
So listen to me now son. Assume every animal you meet could kill you, before you go screaming at it in admiration. Else you’ll live a shorter life in the shinobi world than the Senju Clan will dare to tolerate.”
What if the enemy had a wolf contract? And Kaito called out to it and got maimed before he knew what hit him? Kontou would not allow that to happen. The boy needed to grow up and start behaving more like a shinobi.
His gaze focused then onto Hatsuo, who seemed to be challenging him. The man was a decent enough shinobi, but Kontou would hardly consider him an equal who earned the right to chastise him.
“Thank you, Hatsuo. But I know what’s best for my son and my family. I’m only as hard as I need to be on the boy.
You kids should get walking to the academy instead of continuing to hang around here. Just because graduation happens to be coming up, won’t save you from your teachers’ wrath if you show up too late.”

Wrath, eh, I wonder what Kontou believes about Academy Instructors? I hope he's aware that scowl of his isn't pretty. The poor kid shouldn't be humiliated like that in front of his friends. I'll leave my daughter some room to maneuver here. He smiled. Hatsuo baited a tiger, and understood the logic, but, a significant part of him followed his instincts instead. In this case, they told him to defuse not escalate. "Of course you're right, Kontou. These kiddos should be off!" He clicked his tongue after speaking, and Ayame darted back to his side without hesitation(despite the lit cigarette). She may have taken one last glance at Ren and his food, though. "Natsuki is safe enough with her classmates. Let's leave them to it, eh, girl?" He spoke to Ayame then took another drawn drag on his joint. This time he shaped the smoke in his mouth and let several perfect rings slip from between his lips. "You're welcome to join me, Kontou. I don't have to instruct today, and am only heading home to an upset wife." He'd appreciate the company if only to slow down his pace a bit. Although he supported Yuna's desire to lead a Genin Team, he knew from the start the Hokage could never support that decision. With Graduation approaching, official correspondence was due out around now. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do!" He chuckled and began to walk back towards the Uchiha Compound. Did dad just permit me to speak up for Kaito? Ayame trailed beside Hatsuo as he drifted off into the distance. The aroma of ash marked his passing and lingered on even after he departed. Natsuki felt unease for a moment but knew if they started towards the Academy, the strict attitude of Kaito's father couldn't follow. Their teachers were not as harsh as Kontou seemed to think: they'd forgive the late arrival. As for the street vendors, they too would be glad once this little gathering ended. After all, the students blocked legitimate customers! However, her morals told her she couldn't leave without defending Kaito. Damn it, why does his father have to be such a dick. I can't just head to class now. "I believe we'll depart as well, but I'll have words with you first," the Uchiha Youth bowed her head a bit in Kontou's direction, knowing a Jounin deserved respect regardless of their personality. That didn't include outright subservience, though, especially when it came to a friend. Unlike Hatsuo, Natsuki's instincts screamed to stand up for Kaito, and not walk away. When she spoke next, it would be to protect him, and she cared not the consequences it may bring. "I recognize the need to scold when it's proper, here it's not. If you attempt to humiliate Kaito in front of me again, you'll have more to fear than a rebellious son. I'll not tolerate it." No malice seethed through her, just straight, unfiltered honesty. She indeed held nothing back, even projecting Kaito's dislike of his father back onto Kontou. As she talked, she glared at him: that famous Uchiha emotion morphed into unwavering loyalty. For a moment, something swirled in her pupils (much like dilation at a lightning pace), but it faded away. If Kaito only challenged with a glance, Natsuki challenged with confrontation. She forgot that just a minute or so ago, the three of them spoke about their upcoming exams. Instead, her full attention was given to ensure Kaito wouldn't be treated this way again (at least not with her by his side). Without realizing it, she stepped between Kontou and her classmates - an unconscious defensive gesture - and folded her arms beneath her chest. This situation would have to resolve before she'd consider going to class. Aside from them, a few heard her outburst, and the bustle of the morning commute paused to give way for an expected retaliatory verbal lashing. Many were curiously onlooking, wondering how the Jounin would respond to a Student addressing his behavior so bluntly.
