When Shouri opened his eyes in the morning his first thought wasn't about his mission. It wasn't until he had already eaten breakfast that he remembered he scheduled yet another basic D-rank mission. The impression his last mission left him with was a great one. He wondered if any of his other missions would be so exciting. They got more difficult and required more with each consecutive mission, although he seemed to have reached his peak with fighting basic criminals. The mission for him today was to catch a cat.
From the sound of it you might assume that this mission would be a breeze compared to his last. How hard could it be for a ninja to run down and outsmart a common house cat? If you put that up against a battle with a known gang member it seems easy. Shouri surely thought it would be. He was wrong. This was no ordinary cat.
The client was the same as usual, Konohagakure's resident crazy cat lady, Mao. Over the years she has grown older and less capable of keeping her cats under control. On occasion a cat may make a break for it, in which case Mao files a request for a mission and the Genin of the village have an opportunity for money and experience. She has many cats and is always getting more, so when one escapes it is usually young and timid. This makes for an easy cat to catch, but again, this was no ordinary cat.
The cat was Mao's oldest, yet somehow still as spry as the kittens. He was wise and cautious, yet also daring and agile. He was a real handful and the worst of it was that he knew the streets like the back of his paw. He knew all the shortcuts were and holes where he could hide. He had plenty of gaps in fences or walls he could exploit to leave you on the other side. The tangled maze of streets and alley ways was child's play to the cunning feline. He was called Chieko and truly lived up to his name even into old age.
Shouri wasn't aware of Chieko or his reputation among shop owners and anyone else who happened to cross path's with this particular cat. He knew about old lady Mao and her seemingly unlimited amount of cats. He knew she couldn't keep up on them anymore and more and more had been going missing lately. What he didn't know was that he was tasked with tracking down an animal who was more well known than he was in the Leaf village. He also hadn't yet realized just how difficult this was going to be for him. Chieko would make a worthy adversary.
The Genin started his mission as he normally did, by making his way to the one who had requested the mission and getting all the information that he could. The more intel you could gather the higher your chances for success. He approached the residence and noticed already the abundance of cats on the outside of the house. At least Shinji will finally get his mission. He laughed to himself. He was so worked up last time about not getting a mission yet, among other things, so Shouri found a bit of relief in the humor of it all.
Before he could even enter the residence Mao burst from the door like a guard dog from his dog house. Two more cats darted off into the distance before she managed to swing the door shut behind her. Everyone gets a mission I guess. he thought.
Mao walked out on rickety limbs, not even noticing the most recently of her escaped pets. Shouri wondered briefly what could be the cause of the mass exodus. She hobbled closer to him and he closed the distance to save her the trouble. Once she was close enough she weakly extended a picture of the cat. No sooner than he grabbed it from her hands she was turned around and heading inside. What a weird lady.. said the voice in his head. He dared not repeat it. Mao was too good a source of income.
Instead he turned on his heels to begin his search. The last thing in the world he expected to see was the cat from the picture. He looked down at the picture, which was marked with black ink with the named Chieko, and then back up and the cat. It was definitely him. For a moment Shouri thought the mission would be easy. Then he began to notice as he crept up on the cat that he was being watched. Since the very beginning it was no coincidence that he seen the cat, Chieko wanted to be found. He waited just in sight of Shouri at the correct height to catch his eye. Just before the Genin was near enough to make a move the cat leisurely stood up and leaped to the top of a shop stall.
Shouri was just behind, catching air where the cat was before. He looked up to see the feline was now on the nearest roof top and running towards another street. Shouri thought for just a moment he seen the wise old cat glimpse back at him with a victorious look. He had outsmarted yet another Genin. The famous trickster cat of the Leaf was at it again.
Shouri couldn't let himself be beat by a cat. Not when his last mission he had defeated a hardened criminal with a hate for shinobi. It was a battle he could have lost his life in. This was, well not nearly as intense, but just as important to the Genin. He had to prove himself above these type of missions and he couldn't do that if he was failing these simple missions. He couldn't even do that if he was struggling with them. So that's when he decided he had to finish this now. He concentrated chakra into his muscles for an amplified leap to catch up to the cat. With the boy on the cats heals he waited for his moment. The cat ran to the end of the row of buildings which led to a small green area which appeared to be some sort of park.
The cat leaped for the park making a break for the fence on the other side of it. Shouri knew he couldn't lose the cat again. This had to be the end. He concentrated a large amount of chakra into his gut for molding, when it was ready he released it in waves through his feet in a combined stream. The two natures combined to form a unique style of ninjutsu, Wood Release, which manifested as a large wall of tightly woven trees that burst from the ground just under and in front of the fleeing feline. The trees formed around him weaving tightly to the cat restricting it's movement.
Shouri approached slowly, panting hard from over exertion. "Man, that is a strain on me. You are one tough cat," he said as he stroked the cats ear. Chieko struggled from inside his wooden binding but to no avail. He could not free himself. Shouri was a kind captor and quickly released him from the wooden wall to a box to protect him from the claws of the fearsome Chieko. When he returned the mini legend to his owner he seemed pleased, like he had a good time but was glad to be with Mao again. It was a feeling Shouri longed for as he headed back home.
