Being a Genin can be a bit tricky at times. Although they are considered shinobi, they are still cheap labour and as such, most members of the village are able to hire their services to do menial work that chunin and jonin don’t have to bother with. Of course, Genin still take part in important missions, but those types of mission are not ones to which they would be assigned by themselves, but rather as part of a team. Alone, Genin can only take up to D-Rank Missions, which are usually pretty boring.
Ren really did enjoy his first and previous mission: trying to capture a cat. That mission, although very casual and not too serious, required the use of his skills and even took into account his bloodline limit, the Byakugan. But this second mission was just outright boring and annoying: he had to weed a vegetable field for a local farmer and, in all honesty, he couldn’t see the point in a shinobi doing that.
”That’s such a pain… I could be doing so many better things such as eating or sleeping, or even doing a more meaningful mission… Heck, I would search for a hundred cats before doing this… I mean, a hundred is a bit much. Maybe a couple or a few… But still, my point stands!” he mumbled to himself, complaining about his current mission as he slowly and uninterestedly made his way to the outskirts of the Hidden Leaf Village so he could meet this lazy farmer who wasn’t even willing to do his job. Yes, Ren was judging, but how could he not, right?
But he changed his mind as soon as he reached the place. The sun was up and warm, the day was humid, and he had every reason to be grumpy right now, but when he saw the old man with a broken arm, his heart immediately melted and he felt bad for even complaining about it. ”I see… That’s why he hired us to help… He can’t really do it and he lives here by himself… I was so stupid to complain…” the young Hyuga thought to himself before greeting his contract holder. ”Yo, Sagisa-san! I’m the one who is going to help you with the field!” he announced, to which the elderly man nodded with a happy and gentle smile on his face. ”Arigato ne, shinobi-kun.” he thanked, to which Ren shook his head. ”No need to thank me! I’m just doing my job hehe!” he said, cracking a large smile on his face.
The field was in a pretty bad shape, with plenty of weeds growing all over it. Ren would need to get rid of them first and foremost before preparing the place for plantation. It would be a lot of work and the heat was not helping, but he was in a good mood now: he liked helping those in need, this was one of the reasons he decided to become a shinobi in the first place, so you could say this was part of his ninja way.
The boy approached the field and saw a scarecrow and that made him chuckle. ”It looks like the sixth Hokage! Hehe!” he thought to himself as he took off his beige hoodie and placed it over the arm of the object together with his ninja undervest. Now that he wasn’t overly warm, he was ready to start. Seeing a pond of water nearby, he chuckled to himself and approached it. Using his nature transformation and the tiger hand seal he shouted. ”Water Clone Jutsu!” and upon saying that and channeling his charka from his body to the body of water, he managed to create another two copies of himself. They looked exactly like Ren, but they only had about 10% of his strength. Two clones were his limit if he didn’t want to exhaust himself, and it was more than enough help.
”Alright guys! With our teamwork, we can do it way faster! Now…” he paused, cracking a smirk and using only one hand seal to activate his doujutsu. ”Byakugan!” he shouted as the irises became slightly visible and the veins popped out around his eyes. This was quite the progress from before, when he needed to use all the hand seals to activate his doujutsu. He was truly progressing faster since he became a Genin, so maybe there was some sense to what Inokai kept on bugging him about; he needed to take this more seriously.
In any case, with 3 Byakugan users, they could see precisely the depths of the weed roots and properly extract them without damaging the dirty a lot, which made the work way easier and faster than it would normally be, so – in a sense – his particular bloodline and nature transformation were playing a major part in performing this mission with excellent pace and results. Due to that, Ren and his two water clones managed to finish weeding the vegetable field in about two and a half hours, which impressed the elderly man, but the work was not done yet.
To be honest, the boy was a bit tired, as he was not used to this type of labour, but using his ninjutsu and doujutsu got him excited and made him forget about the depletion of his stamina. Now they just needed to prepare the field for plantation and their work would be done. Grabbing the tools, the three Rens performed the work in perfect synch as they were – essentially – the same individual. As they finished the work, the two clones poofed and now it was just Ren and Sagisa, who came holding a cup of green tea for the boy as thanks for the good work. He chuckled, appreciating the gesture and nodded as he took the cup. ”Thank you, Sagisa-san!”, but the man shook his head. ”I thank you, young man! You did it so fast and now I can just sow the land and wait for it to grow!” and with those words, the boy grabbed back his cloths from the sixth Hokage looking scarecrow and went back to the Hokage’s office to give his full report.
